The winter chill is on and some could get snow before the week ends

Keep that winter coat handy this workweek and also have an umbrella ready as some light snow and a wintry mix are expected to fall before the weekend.

Be aware on Thursday that a wind advisory will be in effect from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. that could bring power outages.

The NBC10 First Alert Weather Team is tracking a week of winter-like temps and even some snow in colder neighborhoods.

Here's what you need to know to stay ahead of whatever Mother Nature brings:

Bundle up for a cold workweek

Fall has ended, climate books for winter are now open and meteorological winter is off to a cold and windy start with temperatures about 10 degrees colder than normal.

Our entire region is expecting January-like temperatures in the upcoming days with highs not getting out of the 40s and lows below freezing most mornings.

Tuesday will be a sunny, but blustery day, with highs peaking in the low 40s, well below Philly’s normal high of 50 degrees. Winds will make it feel like the 30s all afternoon.

Plenty of sunshine, but some lake-effect snow for some

Tuesday night, will be clear and cold, but clouds will increase Wednesday, leading to a dry, but mostly cloudy and chilly afternoon.

The Lehigh Valley and Poconos could see a few more clouds and even some minor snowflakes due to lake effect snow from Lake Erie on Tuesday.

Fortunately, a shift to a southerly wind will keep temperatures above freezing Wednesday night, which is important as late-night showers arrive.

Wintry weather brings mixed bag depending where you are

The showers, moving in with a strong cold front, will be a mix of rain and snow early Thursday.

However, with above-freezing temperatures, no accumulation is expected for many neighborhoods, just some wet roads from the Lehigh Valley to the Jersey Shore.

Light accumulations of an inch or two is possible in the higher elevations in the Poconos.

Strong winds will pick up and make it feel even colder

By Thursday afternoon, winds will intensify with gusts over 40 mph, bringing much colder air. Temperatures should fall into the lower 30s by late afternoon.

The National Weather Service issued a wind advisory from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Thursday for our entire region.

Gusts could reach up to 50 m.p.h. and may bring some power outages.

Those wind gusts will be strong enough Thursday to displace outdoor items, so it’s a good idea to secure or bring in furniture, decorations and trash bins to prevent them from being blown away.

Friday and Saturday will be less windy, but quite cold, with highs in the 30s.

Warmer temps next week

Thankfully, a warm-up begins Sunday, with temperatures near 50 and rising into the 50s early next week. Above-average temperatures return ahead of our next round of rain by the middle of next week.
