First Alert: Damaging winds, intense storms in parts of the Philly area

Severe weather moved into parts of the region on Wednesday evening

NBC Universal, Inc.

The threat of severe storms continues throughout Wednesday night. Many people are left cleaning up the mess and thousands are left without power. Events happening in and around Philadelphia were also cancelled due to the storm. NBC10’s First Alert meteorologist Justin Godynick and NBC10’s Aaron Baskerville break down the damage left behind and what’s to come.

A FIRST ALERT is now in effect for our region for Wednesday, June 26.

The severe weather is expected to last through the evening hours as the main line of storms could arrive in Lehigh and Berks counties around 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Closer to Philadelphia, the storms may start to pop up between 6 and 8 p.m. as New Jersey could start to see the first of the rain around 7 p.m.

The National Weather Service issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch that is expected to last until 12 a.m. for parts of New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

Be prepared to possibly see damaging winds, hail, flooding and even some brief tornadoes could happen. Areas northwest of the city of Philadelphia will see the strongest of the storms.

Our region is under a "slight risk" for the severe weather chances which could mean that scattered storms are possible.

Scattered storms are expected to be intense, short-lived and not widespread for our region.

Areas that are northwest of the city of Philadelphia are most likely to possibly see tornadoes with these systems.

Ahead of the storms, it's humid and very hot. Feels like temperatures could reach into the upper 90s as Philadelphia could hit 101 degrees.

During all of this, a heat advisory will stay in effect until 9 p.m. as we're under a code orange for air quality until 11 p.m.

Looking ahead to nicer weather

Our Thursday is expected to start off with lots of clouds before the sun comes out to make for a pleasant evening.

Friday should be fabulous, so make sure to get outside and enjoy it.

As of now, the weekend is forecasted to bring some scattered storms with rain, so check back with NBC10 as Saturday gets closer.
