The winds of change have arrived as the Philadelphia region braces for the first of several winter storms over the coming days.

Cloudy skies Wednesday helped keep high temperatures in the 30s, setting the stage for wintry precipitation to begin late Wednesday evening.

Watch out for slick spots overnight into Thursday morning.

Light snow showers moved over the region when the storm system developed on Wednesday, but as warmer air moves in overnight into Thursday morning, snow should quickly change to sleet and freezing rain, especially for neighborhoods north and west of I-95, where cold air will hold on the longest.

Map shows icy radar over parts of Philadelphia region Thursday morning.

By early Thursday morning, up to a quarter of an inch of ice accumulation was making for a treacherous commute.

The I-95 corridor and points south will see a quicker changeover, but even there a light glaze of ice is possible before transitioning to plain rain.

Any coating of ice has lead to a tricky Thursday morning commute and school delays.

It doesn't look like much snow -- less than 1 inch for most neighborhoods -- will fall, so the focus is on the ice threat.

Basically, expect Thursday morning due to whatever icy precipitation falls.

Expect it all to turn to rain by later in the morning.

Temperatures will gradually rise above freezing for most neighborhoods by late Thursday morning, but until then expect the potential for very slick conditions.

More snowy/icy weather could be on the way

Temperatures on Friday are expected in the mid 40s under partly sunny skies. However, the nice conditions don't last.

You want to be ready for another potential winter storm on Saturday this weekend. Like the Wednesday into Thursday storm, what starts as snow and ice is expected to change to just rain by Saturday night.

The rain should end before sunrise Sunday, leading to decent conditions for your Eagles Super Bowl parties.

However, keep the snow gear near: We have several opportunities for accumulating snow next Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. So, stay tuned.

We’ll be watching for any changes and posting updates to the First Alert Weather forecast as the wintry weather evolves. The best bet is to keep watching the latest forecast on NBC10 News and to have the latest version of our app downloaded to your device so you get any weather alerts.
