A single ticket sold in California won Friday’s $1.22 billion Mega Millions jackpot, the lottery announced Saturday morning.

The Mega Millions jackpot has reached a whopping $1.22 billion. With the drawing set to take place late Friday night, NBC10’s Lauren Mayk caught up with Philly residents who bought tickets in the hopes of hitting big. 

The jackpot for Friday’s drawing currently sits at an estimated $1.15 billion, with a cash option of $516.1 million.

Mega Millions is played in 45 states plus the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The five states that do not participate in this lottery are Alabama, Alaska, Hawaii, Nevada and Utah.

Larger payouts attract more media attention, increase ticket sales and bring in new players.

If you overspent for the holidays, there’s a chance to get a billion dollars to help pay for those gifts. The Mega Millions jackpot is now $1.15 billion for the next drawing, or $516 million in cash payout. NBC10’s Lauren Mayk reports.
