The driver of a southbound black Nissan crossed the double yellow line and struck a red Chevrolet going northbound, police said. The Nissan then struck a tree on the northwest side of the road before stopping.

Two people were trapped in one of the cars and had to be rescued, investigators said.

Later in the morning, the driver of the Nissan was listed in critical condition at a local hospital, while a Nissan passenger and both people in the Chevy were being treated in stable condition at area hospitals, police said.

Kelly Drive reopened in time for the morning rush.

The crash remained under investigation Monday.
