Philly Bike Ride, street festivals, free concerts bring weekend road closures. Your guide

Here are the fun events that are leading to road closures and detours in Philadelphia this weekend

Fall has arrived and with the pumpkin spice, falling leaves and cooling temps come plenty of festivals, runs, parades and other events that will leave roads in Philadelphia blocked.

(NOTE: A stretch of Interstate 76 eastbound connecting University City to South Philadelphia will be closed again this weekend. Here's how to avoid it.)

Here's your guide to all the fun on Saturday and Sunday and how to avoid the road closures.

Saturday, Oct. 19, 2024

Philly Bike Ride

Cyclists or varying skills with hop on their bikes for "Philly's only car-free social joyride," according to organizers.

This race is drawing around 6,000 riders young and old.

"Bike through iconic historical landmarks and vibrant scenic views on a completely car-free course designed for all ages (3+) and experience levels," the event's website says.

Danielle Berman Ruiz, of the Philly Bike Ride, talks with NBC10's Brenna Weick about the upcoming bike ride to be held on Saturday, Oct. 19, 2024. During the day, hundreds of riders will be able to ride on 20 miles of car-free streets throughout Center City Philadelphia.

The 20-mile course runs through Center City and along the Schuylkill river drives.

When? The race starts at 7:30 a.m. Road closures begin earlier.

Mummers Museum Fall Festival

South Philadelphia's Mummers Museum is taking the pageantry and fun onto South 2nd Street for a fall festival and vendor market. The event features food, shopping, live entertainment and more.

When? 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

What streets will be closed? South 2nd Street from Washington Avenue to Federal Street from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

East Falls Fest

Stroll Midvale Avenue with plenty of fall and Halloween fun.

"Head down to Ridge and Midvale for a 1400 square foot maze craze (Halloween themed!), pumpkin decorating, face painting, and inflatable ax throwing," the East Falls Development Corporation says. "Music and performances all day – Philadelphia Circus Arts, East Falls own River Bones, and more."

There will also be artisans selling crafts, neighborhood restaurants offering food and a Wissahickon Brewing beer garden, organizers say.

When? 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

What streets will be closed? Midvale Avenue from East River Road to Franklin Street and East River Road from Inn Yard Park to South Ferry Road will be closed from 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Peace Not Guns Southwest Philly Community Day

Philadelphia City Council President Kenyatta Johnson has attached his name to this anti-gun violence festival and concert along Kingsessing Avenue. The event features "free food, family-friendly activities & fun for all," organizers say.

The performing include The Philly Intruders, Sturdy Youngin and legendary Philly rapper Beanie Sigel.

When? Starts at noon

What streets will be closed? Kingsessing Avenue between 58th and 60th streets from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Philadelphia 16th Police District Open Sweat Jam

Bring your mats and blankets to the The Lawn along Filbert Street in University City for this fitness-themed event, according to the police district.

When? Noon to 7 p.m.

What streets will be closed? 37th Street from Cuthbert to Filbert streets and Cuthbert Street between 37th and 38th streets from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Celebrate Philadelphia Block Party

The second of two block parties taking place outside Philadelphia election satellite offices, The goal? "To increase participation in the 2024 General Election by encouraging voter registration, celebrating engagement in the civic landscape, and building community through entertainment," according to organizers.

This edition takes over a stretch of North Broad Street near Temple University.

When? 1 to 6 p.m.

What roads will be closed? North Broad Street from West York to West Dauphin streets from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Picnic in the Plaza with the Pops

Bring your blankets, chairs and food for a picnic in the Headhouse Square area as the No Name Pops perform Motown hits with vocalist Paula Holloway during a FREE concert.

When? 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

What streets will be closed?

500 block of South 2nd Street from South to Lombard Streets and South Street from South 2nd to South 3rd streets will be closed from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., the city said.

AIDS Walk Philly

The signature event for AIDS Walk Philly helps support the organization's mission of supplying grants to "the most vulnerable of those living with HIV," according to organizers. The event features 5K walk along the Schuylkill River.

AIDS Fund Philadelphia executive director Robb Reichard talks to NBC10's Matt DeLucia about the work the group does for those living with HIV and AIDS and how this weekend's AIDS Walk helps raise money for the cause.

When? Registration opens at 7:30 a.m., walk/run begin at 8:30 a.m.

What streets will be closed? The course traditionally runs from the Philadelphia Museum of Art side of Eakins Oval up MLK Drive

Market Street Run for Blue

Ready to run to support the brave men and women of the Philadelphia Police Department? The 5-mile Run for Blue takes participants from the Delaware River to Schuylkill River and back again along Market Street.

"The run will begin at Front Street and Dock Street, continuing north on Front Street to Market Street," Philadelphia police said. "The route will then head west on Market Street around the north side of City Hall to 15th Street. Runners will proceed south on 15th Street to Market Street and continue west to the Schuylkill River, reaching the turnaround point at the 2400 block of Market Street.

"The return leg will follow eastbound Market Street back to 15th Street, with runners circling the south side of City Hall and heading east on Market Street to 3rd Street. From there, the route turns south on 3rd Street to Chestnut Street and finishes on Chestnut, concluding closer to 2nd & Market Streets."

When? Race starts at 8 a.m.

What streets will be closed?

The following streets will be closed beginning at 5 a.m. and will reopen no later than noon, the city of Philadelphia said.
