Williams and Ram Advance in Mixed Doubles; Puig Wins Puerto Rico's First Gold

In men's singles, Rafael Nadal was upset

Olympic tennis saw a day of upsets and a first on Saturday.

In the women's singles gold medal match, Puerto Rico's Monica Puig beat Germany's Angelique Kerber 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 to win her territory's first gold in any sport in Olympic history.

In the tennis mixed doubles semifinals, Venus Williams and Rajeev Ram of the U.S. beat India's Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna 2-6, 6-2, 10-3 tiebreak to advance to Sunday's gold medal match. Williams and Ram will face fellow Americans Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Jack Sock, who defeated the Czech Republic’s Lucie Hradecká and Radek Štěpánek 6-4, 7-6 (3).

Earlier Saturday, Argentina's Juan Martin del Potro, who knocked out No. 1 Novak Djokovic in the first round, surprised No. 3 seed Rafael Nadal of Spain 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) to advance to the gold medal match against Great Britain's Andy Murray.

The second-seeded Murray swept Japan's Kei Nishikori in two sets, winning 6-1 and 6-4 to advance to Sunday's final against the unseeded del Porto.

American Madison Keys fell to two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic 7-5, 2-6, 6-2 in Saturday's women's tennis singles bronze match. Keys, who lost 6-3, 7-5 to Kerber or Germany on Friday, finished fourth.
