Bare, Naked Bikers

It was all about raising awareness and eyebrows.

More than 1,000 nude or scantily-clad bike riders cycled for Philadelphia's first Naked Bike Ride Sunday night.

“We never had the opportunity to do this and riding through the city just makes you feel better,” one rider told NBCPhiladelphia.

The ride was all about raising awareness and spotlight the vulnerability of cyclists, organizers said.  The clothing-optional, four-mile course through Center City ended at 5th and Fairmont.

"Philadelphia has come a long way with bicycles in the last few years, and this is a really cool way to just make their presence recognized," Chrystal Smith of Delaware County told NBC Philadelphia.

The official Naked Bike Ride started in 2004 in Canada and Spain, and cities across the U.S., Europe and Australia have participated in similar rides.

Of course, not everyone was in the buff. There were some who still wore clothing. There were still public indecency laws to comply with after all.  Some even wore stickers in strategic places.

The ride was also an opportunity to bring awareness to green issues, like gas emissions.

“We love being naked and riding our bike we just want to make the world a better place,” said another participant.
