NJ Transit Service Resumes After Stuck Bridge Snarls Trains

Train pain is back at Penn Station: first, power problems caused delays and cancellations during the morning commute. Then a bridge malfunction stopped trains dead in their tracks for hours this afternoon. Adam Kuperstein reports.

New Jersey Transit trains began running in and out of New York Penn Station Thursday afternoon, an hour after a stuck drawbridge in Secaucus brought service to a halt.

The rail carrier said Thursday that trains are still subject to 30-minute delays after the Amtrak Portal Bridge got stuck in the open position about 11 a.m. Amtrak said the bridge was brought back down about 12:30 p.m.

NJ Transit said it is cross-honoring rail passes on its bus service as well as private carriers. PATH is also accepting NJ Transit tickets.

Earlier in the day, overhead wire problems delayed early morning commuters, but Amtrak resolved the issues before the height of the morning rush.

And on Monday, service was delayed significantly by a train that broke down in one of the Hudson River tunnels.

The problems come days after Amtrak began a second round of track repairs at New York Penn Station.

Officials said the disruptions would not be as significant as during the first set of repairs during last year's so-called "Summer of Hell."
