Man Charged in Newark Street Shooting That Left 2 Brothers Dead

Authorities have made an arrest in a weekend street shooting that left two brothers dead in New Jersey's largest city.

Zabdiel Vargas-Soto faces two counts of murder and two weapons offenses stemming from the shooting early Sunday in the Ironbound section of Newark. The 22-year city resident was arrested late Monday. It wasn't known Tuesday if he has retained an attorney.

Vargas-Soto is charged in the deaths of 25-year-old Jose Castillo-Granados and 22-year-old Francisco Castillo. Essex County prosecutors have said that the shooting stemmed from a dispute and that the brothers appeared to know their assailant.

A detention hearing for Vargas-Soto is scheduled for Wednesday.

Authorities say 44 people have been killed in Newark this year.
