2nd Shooting Hours After 1st at Delaware State University

Police continue to investigate two shootings at Delaware State University, one of which injured three people during a large outdoor event. NBC10’s Randy Gyllenhaal has the details.

A second shooting at Delaware State University in Kent County just hours after a gunman opened fire during an on-campus event shut down the campus to visitors Sunday morning as police searched for the shooter.

The first shooting occurred around 8 p.m. Saturday during an annual University-sanctioned student Greek cookout event, according to DSU president Harry L. Williams.

Three people were injured in that shooting and taken to Kent General Hospital in stable condition. Officials say none of the victims are students at DSU.

A fight during broke out during the Field Day event and that's what lead to the shooting, witnesses told NBC10. Over 1000 students were in attendance when the gunman opened fire.

"One guy was on the ground bleeding out," said the witness, who did not want to be identified. "The other guy was limping."

Sources told NBC10 police tried to get a large crowd of students out of the area and forced them away from the school's student center. Multiple police choppers also arrived at the campus. One source described the scene as "controlled chaos."

Five hours later, a second shooting happened at the University Courtyard apartments about a block off campus. The apartments are run by the university.

No one was injured in the second shooting, police said.

The campus was shut down following the shootings while police investigated.

"The student residential population has been directed to stay in their residential halls," Williams said. "Non-DSU individuals are being directed off-campus."

Police describe the shooter in the first incident as a man 5'9" to 5'11" with dreadlocks. He was wearing a tan and blue long-sleeved T-shirt and was seen driving a dark 4-door sedan.

It's unclear if the shootings were related or if the shooter is a DSU student, according to school spokesman Carlos Holmes.

Delaware State University is a public university located in Dover, Delaware with two satellite campuses in Wilmington and Georgetown.

Anyone with information on the shootings is urged to call DSU Police at 302-857-7911.
