‘Suspicious Black People in White Neighborhoods' Email Leads to New Jersey Police Chief Suspension

A New Jersey police chief has been suspended with pay amid an investigation into a 2014 email he sent to township police condoning profiling — racial or otherwise — in law enforcement, given it was used "fairly."

The Record newspaper reports the Wyckoff Township Committee voted Tuesday night to suspend Chief Benjamin Fox.

The email states police investigate "suspicious black people in white neighborhoods" because "black gang members from Teaneck commit burglaries in Wyckoff."

Mayor Kevin Rooney says the paid suspension will end once Bergen County prosecutors and the state Attorney General's Office finish investigating.

Fox agreed to go on administrative leave in late March. He has denied wrongdoing in internal emails.
