A woman was killed after being shot outside a middle school in Smyrna, Delaware, police said.

The shooting happened around 10:15 a.m. Tuesday in the front parking lot of Smyrna Middle School along Duck Creek Parkway. The middle school and high school are located at the same complex.

The 38-year-old victim was not a student and did not work at the school, Smyrna Police Lt. Brian Donner said.

The alleged shooter, a 47-year-old man, was chased by several police agencies into Maryland where they were apprehended after crashing into a tree in the town of Galena, Donner said. He was airlifted to a hospital for medical treatment following the crash.

The shooting was described as a domestic incident. Donner said the woman and man were arguing when the shooting happened. A school resource officer tried to save the woman's life, but she ultimately died in the parking lot.

It's unclear why the couple were in the parking lot.

A representative with the Smyrna School District said in a phone call shortly after the incident that they were dealing with the situation and could not comment further. It's not clear how many students were in the building at the time.
