A senior wide receiver at the University of Delaware is facing assault charges after police say he hit a teammate with a helmet in the locker room.
University police say Jerel Harrison hit another player with his helmet during an altercation in the locker room after practice on Thursday evening. The victim was taken to Christiana Hospital for treatment of an undisclosed injury and released.
Harrison, a senior from Richmond, Va., was arrested by UD police and sent to Wilmington Howard R. Young Prison on charges of first degree assault. He's being held on a $25,000 cash bail. He's been ordered to have no contact with the victim or the university. He's also been issued a trespass warning to stay away from the Newark campus.
The university said in a statement that there will be no comment due to the ongoing investigation.
Harrison was expected to be a "vital member of the Delaware passing game," according to the UD football media guide. He was also projected to be the team's top kickoff returner. Harrison played in 34 games with 25 starts at Delaware. He was an honor student at UD with a history major.
