A Virginia public safety official has been tapped to become Philadelphia's new fire commissioner.
Mayor Jim Kenney is scheduled to announce Tuesday the appointment of Adam Thiel to the post. Thiel has been serving as deputy secretary of public safety and homeland security for the commonwealth of Virginia.
Before that, Thiel was fire chief of Alexandria, Virginia and officials said he has also served in fire and emergency service organizations in Maryland, North Carolina and Arizona.
The mayor is also scheduled to announce Blanche Carney as the city's prisons commissioner. She has been deputy commissioner since January 2015 and has been with the Philadelphia prison system since 1995.
