Historic Ship on the Delaware

On the first stop of a world tour to celebrate its 75th anniversary, the tall ship arrived in town Friday

The U.S. Coast Guard Barque (Barkh) Eagle is spending a weekend in Philadelphia.

On the first stop of a world tour to celebrate its 75th anniversary, the tall ship arrived in town Friday. It promotes the work of the Coast Guard and its nonprofit arm, the Coast Guard Foundation, which supplements the needs of cadets not covered by federal funding.

Tour stops will include London; Reykjavik, Iceland; and Hamburg, Germany, where the ship was built in 1936. It was later acquired by the U.S. through war reparations.

The Eagle was re-commissioned May 15, 1946. It sailed to New London, Conn., where it has served as a training classroom since.
