A robbery suspect in a police pursuit that spanned from Delaware County into the heart of Philadelphia ended with the man being arrested after he returned to the SUV to pick up a pet dog, according to police.

Upper Darby Township police put out a description of a white Dodge Durango that was used in a smoke shop robbery and two men and a women believed to be involved Tuesday night, Upper Darby Police Superintendent Timothy Bernhardt said.

Upper Darby officers pulled over a vehicle matching the one used in the robbery overnight, Bernhardt said at a Wednesday news conference.

"As officers approached, the vehicle took off at a high-rate of speed," Bernhardt said.

The chase entered Philadelphia before finally ending near 23rd and Market streets in Center City, Philadelphia and Upper Darby police said.

The people in the SUV ran off, Philadelphia police said. Officers captured one about a block away.

Another suspect was captured after Philly police said he returned to the stopped SUV to retrieve a dog left behind.
