University of Delaware Student Pleads Guilty to Recording Women in Bathroom

A University of Delaware graduate student accused of secretly filming hundreds of women using restrooms on campus has pleaded guilty in the case.

Javier Mendiola-Soto pleaded guilty Tuesday to 49 counts of felony invasion of privacy. His sentencing is March 27.

The News Journal reports that investigators uncovered more than 1,500 videos of women using restrooms at 10 locations at the university, a Goodwill in Newark, and in his home, which he shared with female roommates.

Each of the 49 counts Mendiola-Soto pleaded guilty to relates to individual women. The rest couldn't be identified.

Mendiola-Soto's attorney described his client as a "shy nerd" who turned to secret cameras as a way of connecting with women.

Mendiola-Soto, who is Mexican, likely will be deported after his prison term.
