Gunman Opens Fire on Undercover Cop Car in Camden; Officer Injured

An undercover police officer was injured after investigators say a suspect opened fire on his car in Camden late Wednesday night.

The shooting happened about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday on Kenwood Avenue near Park Boulevard in the Parkside section.

Investigators say the undercover Camden County Police Department officer was in an unmarked police car when a black SUV pulled over and parked on Kenwood Avenue.

Police say four suspects -- three males and one female -- got out of the SUV. As the officer drove past the suspects, investigators say one of the suspects fired several rounds at the officer’s car.

The officer had a bullet fragment lodge into his arm. He drove away from the scene, but later circled back to search for the suspects, who fled the scene by that time.

The officer was taken to Cooper University Hospital where he was treated for his injury and later released. The officer has been with the Camden County Police Department for three years.

The suspects remain on the loose.

Anyone with information on the shooting and/or the suspects is urged to call the Camden County Police Department’s anonymous tip line at 856-757-7042.
