A University of Delaware police officer shot a person who was armed with a knife in a train station parking lot over the weekend, police said.

The ordeal began Sunday around 4:30 p.m. at the Newark Regional Transportation Center in Delaware. University of Delaware and Newark police officers responded to a distress call from a person in the station’s parking lot. The person – a 24-year-old Maryland resident with no affiliation with the University of Delaware – told 911 operators they were in possession of a knife and had suicidal intentions, according to investigators.

A responding University of Delaware police officer exited their vehicle to check on the Maryland resident who called 911. That person then exited their vehicle while holding a knife and walked toward the officer, police said.

The officer walked backward and repeatedly told the person to return to their vehicle and place the knife on the ground, officials said. The armed person did not comply and continued moving toward the officer, according to investigators. The officer then pulled out their service weapon and opened fire, shooting the Maryland resident at least once.

Officers at the scene immediately provided medical aid to the Maryland resident, investigators said. The person was then taken to the hospital and treated for injuries that investigators don’t believe are life-threatening.

As the person recovers in the hospital, a warrant was issued for them with charges of aggravated menacing and possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony.

The University of Delaware officer was not hurt during the incident and placed on administrative duty amid the investigation, per standard department policy.

Anyone who witnessed the incident should call 302-831-2222. University of Delaware Police, Newark Police, Delaware State Police and the Department of Justice Division of Civil Rights and Public Trust are all involved in the investigation.

Officials said there is no immediate threat to the University of Delaware community at this time.
