Car, Truck Burst Into Flames in Schuylkill Expressway Crash

A tractor-trailer burst into flames after a car crashed into the truck on the Schuylkill Expressway Sunday night.

The car became pinned under the big rig around 11:30 p.m. in the westbound lanes of I-76 near the Girard Avenue exit, officials said. A fire then started in the car before spreading to the truck.

No one was hurt.

Westbound lanes were shut down for several hours at the scene of the crash. The road has since reopened.

As responding firefighters worked to control the flames two other vehicles collided on I-76 eastbound. Officials say the drivers of those cars may have been distracted by the initial fiery crash. Two lanes are now closed on the eastbound side of I-76 due to the second accident.
