Hundreds of men and women marched in Philadelphia on Saturday as part of an international movement to protest a culture they say blames women and how they dress for sexual assault.
It was all part of SlutWalk Philadelphia. It's an event that raises awareness about sexual assaults -- specifically addressing the motto that "A Person's Appearance Is Not The Cause Of Sexual Assault."
SlutWalk started in Toronto, Canada earlier this year after a police officer there, who was talking about crime prevention on a college campus, offered up this advice: “Women should avoid dressing like sluts in order to not be victimized.”
After the first SlutWalk protest march in Toronto, the movement took off and similar marches have been held around the world.
SlutWalkPhiladelphia.Com says, “We are taught ‘don’t get raped’, instead of ‘don’t rape.” The organization believes many women are blamed and shamed when they become the victim of sexual assault or abuse.
Saturday's walk in Philly began at Kahn Park at 11th at 11 a.m. and ended at City Hall.
