Officers responded to the scene after getting reports of a person with a gun at 5:39 p.m., a spokesperson with the Philadelphia Police Department said.

A woman in her early twenties was shot one time in the right knee, police said. Medics took her to a nearby hospital.

The condition of the victim is unknown, police said. A suspect was arrested in connection to the shooting.

First Deputy Commissioner John M. Stanford told NBC10 that a road rage incident led to the shooting. Two cars were traveling southbound on Broad Street when the drivers started shooting at each other.

The woman was riding as a passenger in one of the vehicles when she was hit, Stanford explained. Only one of the drivers had a permit to carry a weapon.

Students and neighbors were urged to avoid the area as police investigated.

SkyForce10 was over the scene just after 6 p.m. where several police cars were visible. The area was blocked off with red caution tape.

Temple University's Vice President of Public Safety and Chief of Police Jennifer Griffin confirmed that no one from the school's community was hurt.

Dr. Griffin also said that a parked bus for a visiting sports team was struck by the gunfire. No one was on board at the time.
