Police say three teenagers were playing with a gun when one of them accidentally shot an 80-year-old grandmother in the head. Two of the teens are in custody while the grandmother is in stable condition. It was part of a violent day in Philadelphia in which a 30-year-old man was shot and killed while holding a baby in a car seat. NBC10’s Matt DeLucia has the details.

Three teenagers accidentally shot a grandmother in the head while playing with a gun inside a Philadelphia home, police said.

The teens were playing with the weapon inside a home on the 2300 block of 77th Avenue Tuesday around 4 p.m. when one of them accidentally fired, according to investigators. A bullet then went through a bedroom floor in the home and struck the 80-year-old grandmother of at least one of the teens in the head while she was in her wheelchair.

The woman was taken to Einstein Hospital in stable condition. Police said the bullet remains lodged in the woman's head though she's expected to survive.

"Eighty years old. You live that long, you would think you have so many years to go and unfortunately people playing with a gun, don't know how to handle it," Philadelphia Police Captain John Walker said. "She takes a shot and it could've ended her life here today over nothing. Kids being infatuated with these guns and instead of picking up guns they should pick up books."

Detectives spent Tuesday trying to determine which teen accidentally fired the weapon. None of the teens are old enough to legally own a gun.

Two of the teens remained at the scene while one teen ran away. The two teens who stayed are now in police custody as investigators search for the third teen.
