Swarthmore College Student Dies After Falling Down Embankment

Anthony Chiarenza of Bayside, New York, was identified as the Swarthmore College student who accidentally fell off a cliff Saturday and died.

A Swarthmore College student died after accidentally falling off a cliff in a wooded section at the back of the school's campus.

School officials identified the student as sophomore Anthony Chiarenza of Bayside, New York.

Police say Chiarenza was alone when he fell about 40 to 50 feet in Crum Woods on Saturday afternoon and was later found by residents.

He later died from his injuries.

The place where the student fell is at the rear of the college property. The location includes several rocky cliffs, as well as hiking trails.

School president Valerie Smith asked students, faculty and staff to keep Chiarenza's family and friends in their thoughts and prayers. She urged students to look out for one another.

The fall occurred the same day Smith was being officially installed as president. Officials say one-on-one counseling will be provided by the college.

The deadly incident remains under investigation.
