SUV Rollover Crash Leaves College Student Dead in Philadelphia

A rollover crash in Philadelphia's Society Hill section early Sunday morning claimed the life of a 20-year-old man.

The victim, a college student, was with a group of three friends after a night out, NBC10's Jesse Gary learned at the scene. He was driving a Toyota 4Runner west on Lombard Street between 4th and 5th streets when police say he hit a bump and lost control of the SUV. The vehicle veered onto the sidewalk, struck two trees, flipped over and rolled onto its top.

Police said the young man was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash and was partially ejected from the SUV, which then rolled onto him. They said they believe speed was a factor in the crash, but that alcohol was not involved.

Three other people in the SUV were not badly injured and declined medical treatment. The four were childhood friends who got together before heading back to college for the fall semester.

An emotional scene unfolded at the site of the crash as family members of those involved in the crash arrived.

Police flipped the SUV upright and towed it from the scene after 7 a.m. Sunday. An investigation into the crash continued.
