It was a night that will go down in history as the first time ever that the School Reform Commission decided to violate the city's charter and NOT approve a new school budget by deadline.
NBC10's George Spencer was there as Philadelphia School District leaders threw the major curveball, stating simply that the funding they've been given so far is insufficient and they just can't make it work.
"We are not going to act on the budget tonight because it is not acceptable," said School Reform Commission Chair William Green.
Leaders say to balance they budget with current funds, they would be forced to cut 800 more teachers -- sending class sizes way up -- devastating what's left of Philadelphia's Public Schools.
"It's irresponsible to actually move forward without the necessary resources to educate children," said School Distrcit of Philadelphia Superintendent Dr. William Hite.
The District says they really need an additional $440 million each year to be fully functioning.
"Rather than adopting a Doomsday 2 budget, and giving anyone the impression that the cuts it contains are feasible or acceptable, we are not going to act on the budget tonight," Green said.
Parents in attendence applauded the bold move.
