Police are investigating a skimming operation at a busy gas station in Wilmington.
A gas station technician alerted authorities this morning after he found skimming devices inside two of the pumps at the Shell gas station at 4201 N. Market Street in Wilmington.
A skimmer is a type of electronic device that can record credit card information, which can then be used for fraudulent purchases.
Police are trying to find out how long the skimmers have been attached to the pumps.
The manager of the gas station talked with NBC10's Chris Cato and says that panel is normally locked and someone would have needed a key to get inside. He says there are no surveillance cameras pointed towards these pumps.
There could be hundreds or thousands of victims, according to police, who are checking maintenance records to find out who had access to the pumps.
Authorities are asking customers who have visited this particular Shell gas station to carefully review any recent credit card and debit card transactions for any fraudulent activity.
