SEPTA trolleys will stop rumbling under Center City Philadelphia's streets for nearly two weeks so the transit authority can complete major station and track upgrades.
All trolley lines stopped service at 40th and Market streets starting at 10 p.m. on Friday, August 9, 2019. The disruption will continue for 10 days until 5 a.m. on Monday, August 19, 2019.
The closure affects the following trolley routes:
- Route 10
- Route 11
- Route 13
- Route 34
- Route 36
Passengers will have to transfer onto the Market-Frankford Line to continue their journey into Center City, SEPTA said.
The five-mile trolley tunnel begins at 40th Street, travels under the Schuylkill River and ends at 15th Street. On average, 700 trolleys use the underground route daily.

Upgrades to lighting, communication, power, plumbing and tracks are among the projects being carried out in the 10 day project that SEPTA has dubbed the 2019 Trolley Tunnel Blitz.
The tunnel project coincides with a separate upgrade project on the Route 101 and 102 trolley lines in Delaware County. Both lines will operate using shuttle buses starting Friday night continuing through Sunday, August 18.
