Gas leak closes Rt. 38, forces evacuation of NJ Walmart

Crews could be seen blocking traffic after a gas leak in Lumberton, New Jersey, forced the closure of Route 38 and the evacuation of nearby Walmart.

A Wednesday morning gas leak led to evacuations at a Walmart and surrounding homes as well as the closure of Route 38 in Lumberton, New Jersey.

The leak occurred at a building on 1740 Rt. 38 shortly before 9:45 a.m. Rt. 38 was closed in both directions from Savory Way to Smithville Road while the Walmart store and surrounding businesses were evacuated.

The evacuation order was later lifted around 11:30 a.m. as crews worked to repair the gas leak. Around 2:30 p.m. Route 38 was reopened in both directions.
