Man Killed, Suspect Arrested After Beverly City, NJ Police Standoff

A man was beaten to death and a suspect was under arrest following a standoff with police inside a home in Burlington County, New Jersey.

The fatal shooting was originally reported around 1:15 a.m. Tuesday at the home in Beverly City. That led to an hourslong standoff inside the residence on Bentley Avenue and Cherry Street.

A woman and four children were released from the home unharmed after the suspect surrendered around 8:30 a.m., Burlington County Prosecutor’s Office spokesman Joel Bewley said.

SkyForce10 was overhead shortly after 7 a.m. as several SWAT units and police personnel surrounded the home.

The home is across the street from Beverly City School, which makes up the Beverly City School District. The school holds grade levels Pre-K through 7th grade.

Due to the police activity, the district announced it would remain closed Tuesday.

"Thank you in advance for your understanding during this emergent situation," the school district said. "But please understand that your child's safety and the safety of our staff is our priority and we would not make this hard decision if we did not feel it absolutely necessary."

Authorities did not immediately identified the deceased or give a possible motive for the shooting and subsequent standoff.
