Off-Duty Officer Shot 8 Times During Altercation in North Philly

Police said the 46-year-old officer, who is a 13-year veteran of the police department, was on North 13th and Pike streets in North Philadelphia around 1:30 p.m. when he got into a verbal altercation with the passenger of a gray vehicle.

An off-duty Philadelphia police officer was shot eight times following an altercation with the passenger of another vehicle. Police say the officer is expected to recover. NBC10’s Lauren Winfrey has the details.

An off-duty Philadelphia police officer was shot eight times in both arms during an altercation several blocks north of Temple University, according to law enforcement officials.

Police said the 46-year-old officer, who is a 13-year veteran of the police department, was on North 13th and Pike streets in North Philadelphia around 1:30 p.m. when he got into a verbal altercation with the passenger of a gray vehicle.

The passenger then pulled out a gun and opened fire, shooting the officer three times in the right arm and five times in the left arm.

The police officer was able to drive himself to Temple University Hospital, where family members and fellow officers began to gather about 2:30 p.m. The officer underwent surgery and is expected to recover.

"The good news is ... this officer is going to be okay," Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw said outside the hospital.

Philadelphia police continue to search for the gunman. They have not yet released a description of the suspect.

The Philadelphia Fraternal Order of Police is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the shooting.
