A suspected hit-and-run driver struck a veteran Upper Darby Township police officer on his way to work Thursday morning, leaving the officer with a broken leg that required surgery.
The 11-year Highway Division veteran was struck near Garrett Road and Owen Avenue in Drexel Hill on Oct. 17, 2024, Upper Darby Police Superintendent Timothy Bernhardt told NBC10.
The officer -- who has not been named -- was rushed to the hospital with his leg broken in two places, Bernhardt said. The officer required surgery for his injury.
The driver who struck the officer was arrested on suspicion of being under the influence, Bernhardt said.

On Thursday morning, SkyForce10 could spot the police motorcycle as it rested in the middle of the intersection as investigators worked at the scene.
The intersection was closed to traffic as of about 7:40 a.m. Thursday, officials said.

Law enforcement officials said an investigation is ongoing.
No charges were announced as of Friday morning.
