Public Pools Opening Soon

Get ready to jump in because by the end of the month a public pool will be open near you.

All 70 of Philadelphia’s outdoor city pools will be opening this year, according to Parks and Recreation Department spokesman Alain Joinville.

“There are going to start opening this Thursday,” Joinville told NBC10.com.

The pools offer free fun for the entire family and a way for people to cool off during the hot summer weather.

Details on the grand opening ceremony are expected to be released later in the week.

Joinville says that once the pools begin opening that the department will open eight to 10 pools each day until all the pools are open.

The public pools will be open seven days a week for anywhere from eight to 10 weeks, Joinville said.

After past years when the city pools opening were in question due to the city’s budget woes, this year the money for the pools was set aside in the city budget.

Also, around 700 people including lifeguards and pool attendants are employed thanks to the pool program.

Joinville said that most of the pools feature camps and other programs. Interested parents or guardians should go to their local recreation centers for signup information.
