Philadelphia Police Find Cross, Full Tank of Gas Outside Center City Church

Philadelphia Police are investigating a possible hate crime after a wooden cross and a tank of gasoline were found outside a Center City church Saturday night.

On Saturday shortly before 10 p.m., 9th District officers were contacted by an unidentified man who reported there was a wooden cross and full tank of gasoline leaning against the First Baptist Church on 17th and Moravian streets.

Responding officers then found a 2’x4’x8’ wooden cross leaning against the rear wall of the church as well as the tank of gas.

Fire officials also responded to the scene but determined there was no fire or accelerant added to the cross. No injuries were reported and no arrests have been made. Police continue to investigate.
