Boy Accidentally Shoots Himself After Finding Gun at Park: Police

An 8-year-old boy is recovering after police say he accidentally shot himself in the foot. Now investigators are searching for the gun. NBC10’s Randy Gyllenhaal has the details.

A young boy is recovering after he was shot in the foot Wednesday afternoon.

The 8-year-old boy told police he was at the Lonnie Young Recreation Center on Chelten Avenue and Ardleigh Street in Germantown at 5:07 p.m. when he found a handgun inside a plastic bag. The boy said he picked it up and then accidentally shot himself in the left foot.

The boy said he managed to walk to his home despite his injury. He was then taken to Einstein Hospital where he is currently in stable condition.

Police were unable to find a weapon at the park and so far no one has come forward saying they heard or witnessed gunfire.

Police are waiting on a warrant to search through the boy's home as they try to determine where the gun is and who it belongs to.

The incident was one of five shootings that occurred Wednesday night in the city.
