Thirteen western Pennsylvania high school students have been suspended for two days each for shooting a classroom video of the "Harlem Shake," an Internet video craze, which was also posted online.
Brownsville Area School Board president Roy Brashear called the hip-thrusting, gyrating dance video "very graphic and very vulgar'' in defending the suspensions.
Fifteen-year-old Alyssa Broadwater says she used her iPad to shoot the video of her friends doing the dance in a classroom on Monday. The board learned of the suspensions at its planning session Tuesday night.
Kathleen Broadwater, the mother of the girl who shot the video, says she doesn't condone the behavior but thinks the punishment was too harsh. She thinks an in-school suspension or detention makes more sense because then the students wouldn't miss classes.
