A Pennsylvania man seeking to raise money for a group that helps post-9/11 military veterans has made his way through northwestern Iowa.
Ivan Stoltzfus, of Honey Brook, Pennsylvania, is in the midst of a 3,100-mile trip across the country on an emerald green John Deere tractor to raise money for the Wounded Warrior Project. On Thursday, his trip took him through Le Mars, the Daily Sentinel reported.
Stoltzfus' goal is to raise $1 million for the organization, which provides services to post-9/11 veterans, service members and their families.
The drive from Manasquan, New Jersey, to Crescent City, California, will take him almost four months. He began on April 26.
The tractor has been retrofitted with a Peterbilt cab, so Stoltzfus can ride through the elements.
"I go about 14, 15 mph," he said.
Stoltzfus said he sticks to back roads. Along the way, he said he stops to hold auctions to raise money.
"A lot of it is getting the word out, and people are donating," he said.
He said he's raised $60,717 so far.
People often stop and cheer along the roadside when they see him coming. Some hold flags.
"It's been a very warm reception," he said.
