A police officer was shot in the leg in Deptford Township, New Jersey, Friday afternoon in a shootout that left a gunman dead, officials said.
The New Jersey Attorney General’s office is investigating after the shooting that took place at about 12:45 p.m. in the area of Doman Avenue.
During the incident, at some point, the officer who was shot in the femur was able to return fire, multiple law enforcement sources told NBC10.
Sources have said that the shooting began following a pedestrian stop on Delsea Drive near a mechanic shop that then turned into a foot chase and a gun fight between the police officer and a male suspect.

Another officer placed a tourniquet on the injured officer and the injured officer was rushed to Cooper University Hospital, sources said. The suspected shooter died at the scene, sources said.
Police were seen focused on two scenes. One was along Delsea Drive in Westville where the initial pedestrian stop took place.

The other was about a mile and a half away where police could be seen investigating outside a home along Doman Avenue near Cobblestone Lane in Deptford. This is where the male suspect was seen on a ring camera running before he collapsed and died.
The officer was listed in critical condition when he was first admitted. He is now out of surgery and in stable condition.
Officials at this time have not revealed the identity of the deceased man.
Police officers could be seen gathered outside of Cooper Hospital, supporting the officer that was shot. Some of the officers could be seen hugging.
The Deptford Township Police Department said all statements regarding the shooting will be released by the New Jersey Attorney General's Office.
