Off-duty officer kills 54-year-old man in Northeast Philly shooting

Philadelphia police are investigating after, they say, an off-duty officer was involved in a shooting late Thursday night. NBC10’s Karen Hua is at the scene.

An off-duty officer was involved in a shooting that happened in Northeast Philadelphia late Thursday that left a man dead, police said.

According to police, the incident happened at about 11:30 p.m. near the intersection of Willits Road and Holme Avenue.

In an afternoon update on Friday, Oct. 4, 2024, officials said the incident happened as a 54-year-old man -- who police have not provided further identifying information on -- approached an off-duty officer's vehicle.

Officials said investigation indicates that prior to the shooting, the off-duty officer -- a 43-year-old officer assigned to the city's Homicide Unit and a 14-year veteran of the force -- along with the 54-year-old victim had pulled their vehicles along on the roadway.

In the moments before the shooting, officials said, the victim exited his vehicle and approached the off-duty officer's vehicle on foot. At that time, the off-duty officer, seated in the driver's seat of his personal vehicle, produced and fired his own, personally owned firearm multiple times striking the other driver.

After the incident, police said, the man was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced.

The incident is being investigated by the Philadelphia Police Department's Officer Involved Shooting Unit, Internal Affairs and the Philadelphia District Attorney's Office, officials said.

In a statement, officials said that investigators are still working to determine "the circumstances surrounding the shooting."

The officer involved has been placed on administrative status pending the results of this investigation, officials said.
