Philadelphia area residents reported smelling something in the air Sunday afternoon.
Just after 3 p.m., Philadelphia Gas Works said received numerous calls from residents complaining about an odor.
"I think it smells sort of like manure or rotting organic matter. My friend thinks it smells like gas," said a resident in the Rhawnhurst section of the city who asked to remain anonymous.
Josette Williams said she walked outside in Chestnut Hill and immediately smelled what she thought was gas.
Philadelphia firefighters dispatched to the 2800 block of Richmond Street to investigate the smell of fumes. After the fire department investigated a home on the street, they found nothing, according to PGW.
The smell was also pervasive in the Germantown section of Philly and Trevose, Bucks County, according to residents there. PGW confirmed they received reports of a smell in Bucks County as well.
The source of the odor has not yet been identified, but a PGW spokesperson told NBC10 that they were able to determine the source is not natural gas.
