Smoke could be seen for miles coming from a brush fire in NJ

Firefighters are currently battling a large brush fire in southern New Jersey on Friday, according to officials.

Members of the Medford Township Department of Fire and EMS are on scene of a brush fire in the south end of Medford on Oct. 11, officials said.

The fire was burning near Woodthrush Trail and Heath Road and captured the attention of everyone nearby.

"I actually came back into the neighborhood, and there was smoke when I came in and I was like what’s going on," witness Andy White said.

They are being assisted by their mutual aid partners, officials said.

SkyForce10 was over the scene on Friday evening where large plumes of smoke were visible miles away.

"It’s pretty scary. It’s been going on for a few hours now. We actually went out to dinner and came back and it turned out to be bigger than when we first saw it," witness Kevin Toner said.

As SkyForce10 got closer, flames could be seen through the trees.

Photos of the fire give a better view of the flames. The intense fire was close to the neighborhood and threatened about 30 homes, firefighters told NBC10.

"We’ll have crew staffing this until it rains," Benjamin Brick, of the New Jersey Forest Fire Service, said. "People will still see fire, smoldering, a lot of dead and down on the ground. It will take days, maybe weeks to consume."

Crews said that quick action and controlled burns allowed them to control the danger.

NBC10 was told that the crews are in what's called the mop up phase of the operation.

They said that the neighborhood is safe. Homeowners will certainly have something to talk about over the weekend.
