Man shot, killed on board SEPTA bus in South Philly, officials say

Police are still searching for the gunman who killed a passenger onboard a SEPTA bus Tuesday night. Police say the shooting may have stemmed from an argument. This is the third shooting on or near a SEPTA bus in as many days. NBC10’s Johnny Archer has the details.

For the third time in as many days, a man was shot and killed near a SEPTA bus, this time the killing took place on board a bus in South Philadelphia Tuesday night, SEPTA officials said.

Carmelo Drayton was onboard a Route 79 bus near South Broad Street and Snyder Avenue around 6:40 p.m. when shots were fired, a SEPTA spokesperson and Philadelphia police said.

The 37-year-old South Philly man was shot at least once in the chest, police said. Medics who responded to the scene took him to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead just before 7:30 p.m.

Police searched for the suspect who is believed to have fled from the bus into the Snyder Station on SEPTA’s Broad Street Line.

SEPTA said at the time following the incident that trains were bypassing the Snyder Station in both directions. Trains were running again about an hour later.

This is the third SEPTA shooting in the past few days. On Sunday night a man was shot and killed getting off a bus in Northeast Philadelphia. Then on Monday afternoon, a teenage boy was killed in a mass shooting at a SEPTA bus stop in the Ogontz neighborhood.

The shooting remained under investigation Tuesday night, officials said. No weapons have been recovered and no arrests have been made.
