Man Kills Mom on Father's Day: Police

A man accused of killing his 71-year-old mother on Father’s Day has been charged but police are still investigating the motive for the crime.

Murder charges have been filed against a southern New Jersey man accused of killing his mother.

Bail was set at $500,000 for 44-year-old Herbert Rowlette of Pemberton Township, who was due to make his initial court appearance on Monday afternoon.

Burlington County Prosecutor Robert Bernardi says Rowlette called police around 5:40 p.m. Sunday to report that a homicide had occurred in the Washington Boulevard home he shared with his mother. Responding officers found 71-year-old Maryanne Rowlette on the living room floor.

A cause of death has not been determined, and a motive for the slaying remains under investigation.

No one else was in the home at the time of the killing.

Rowlette's mental state is being evaluated.
