Man Arrested for 7th DUI Claims Elephant Caused Accident: Cops

A man arrested for his seventh DUI allegedly told police he crashed his car because he saw an elephant coming towards his vehicle.

It’s the elephant’s fault. That’s the reason a man arrested for his seventh DUI gave for his latest car accident, according to investigators.

Police say Samuel Phipps, 31, of New Castle, was driving a red Land Rover on I-295 southbound last Friday shortly before 9 p.m. Phipps allegedly drove the vehicle off the left side of the roadway and struck the left guardrail, just south of the ramp to State Route 141 northbound.

Police say the trooper who responded to the scene of the crash found that Phipps appeared to be impaired.

Phipps allegedly admitted to smoking marijuana that had been dipped in PCP prior to driving.

Investigators say Phipps also claimed he crashed because he saw an elephant running in the path of his vehicle and he swerved out of the way to avoid it.

Phipps was charged with his 7th DUI and Failure to Have Required Insurance.

He was committed to Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on $21,000 secured bond.
