Chester Upland Teacher Invited to State of the Union

Sara Ferguson, 48, will sit with First Lady Michelle Obama, during President Obama's State of the Union.

A local teacher is heading to Washington, D.C. after receiving the invite of a lifetime. Sarah Ferguson, 48, will sit next to First Lady Michelle Obama during Tuesday night’s State of the Union address.

Ferguson has taught at Columbus Elementary in the Chester Upland School District for 21 years, according to the Inquirer. Recently Ferguson and other members of the Chester Upland teachers union said they would work without pay after the district ran out of money. Stopgap funding has since then been put in place, according to the Inquirer.

The White House, which announced Ferguson’s invite Tuesday morning, described the teacher as someone who “sees education as a vehicle of change in our society, and feels privileged to have touched the lives of so many students,” according to the Morning Call.

President Obama will deliver his State of the Union address to a joint session of Congress and millions of television viewers Tuesday night at 9 p.m.
