Local rapper Beanie Sigel, 38, was sentenced to two years in prison today for failing to file federal income tax returns. Sigel pleaded guilty to the charge back on August 9, 2011. He was ordered to report to prison on September 12.
According to the charges, Sigel earned in excess of $1 million between 2003 and 2005 on which he owed approximately $348,077 in federal income taxes which he never paid. Sigel is also accused of failing to file income tax returns or pay income tax from 1999 to 2002. Finally, according to the charges, Sigel earned more than $2.2 million in income between 1999 and 2005 on which he only paid $10,000 in tax.
The Internal Revenue Service states Sigel still owes around $728,536 in taxes for tax years 1999 through 2005. A U.S. District Court Judge ordered Grant to pay all taxes, penalties and interest as determined by the IRS and to fully cooperate with them, in addition to the prison term.
Born Dwight Grant in Philadelphia, Sigel was a former member of Roc-A-Fella Records and close associate of rap superstar Jay-Z before the two experienced a public fall out.
