The shelter-in-place and recommended evacuation for homes and businesses near the SPS Technologies fire were lifted on Wednesday. NBC10’s Deanna Durante spoke with the impacted residents. 

What to Know

  • A massive fire that started at the SPS Technologies building on 301 Highland Avenue in Abington Township, Pennsylvania, on Monday, Feb. 17, remained active two days later on Wednesday, Feb. 19.
  • About 60 workers were at the site at the time the fire broke out. Officials said they are all accounted for and no injuries were reported.
  • Officials have not revealed the cause of the fire but said there were multiple explosions inside the facility.
  • A shelter-in-place was in effect for residents and businesses within a one mile radius of the fire. The shelter-in-place and evacuation recommendation was lifted on Wednesday, at 11 a.m.
  • The fire caused SEPTA to suspend their Lansdale/Doylestown, West Trenton and Warminster regional rail lines. Those lines reopened on Wednesday, Feb. 19. The Noble Train Station, Glenside Train Station and Jenkintown Train Station remain closed until further notice, however.
  • All schools in the Abington, Jenkintown and Cheltenham school districts were closed on Wednesday, Feb. 19, due to the fire. Officials announced that Abington schools will reopen on Thursday, Feb. 20.
  • During a Wednesday morning press conference, officials said the air quality in the area is safe. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), and local hazmat teams continue to monitor.

SPS Technologies shares community hotline

SPS Technologies shared a message Wednesday to the community following the fire that started at the factory in Abington on Monday night.

The company confirmed that none of their employees were hurt in the fire and that they are working on evaluating the damage caused.

Cheltenham schools to return to normal Thursday

After the fire at SPS Technologies in Abington, Pennsylvania, impacted the neighboring school districts, the Cheltenham School District announced that they are reopening Thursday.

The district took to Facebook to announce that the schools would return to normal.

Classes for all students within the School District of Jenkintown will be held virtually on Thursday, Feb. 20.

Officials with the district took to Facebook to announce that the schools will be deep cleaned with classes returning to in-person learning on Friday.

Abington School District schools to reopen on Thursday

All Abington School District schools will reopen on Thursday, Feb. 20, officials announced on Wednesday.

The schools had been closed after Monday's massive fire at the SPS Technologies building.

Schools in the Jenkintown School District have also been closed due to the fire. Officials have not yet revealed if those schools will reopen on Thursday as well.

Shelter-in-place, voluntary evacuation lifted

The shelter-in-place and evacuation recommendations for homes and businesses impacted by the SPS Technologies fire in Abington Township, Pennsylvania, was lifted on Wednesday at 11 a.m.

Officials said the decision was made in consultation with federal, state, county and local officials, including the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and HAZMAT teams.

"Residents in the Evacuation zone may return to their homes and residents and businesses in the Shelter-in-Place zone may resume normal activities," an Abington Township spokesperson wrote. "The EPA and DEP will continue to monitor air and water conditions to ensure public safety. No hazards have been detected in the area surrounding the fire and the area has been deemed safe. If conditions change, the public will be notified immediately of protective actions to be taken."
