The father of a boy who was struck by a piece of metal and the cousin of a woman who remains in a coma are speaking out after a medical jet crash in Northeast Philadelphia killed seven people and injured at least 22 others. Meanwhile, NTSB investigators found the aircraft’s black box while searching through the wreckage. NBC10’s Brian Sheehan has the latest. 

What to Know

  • A medical jet carrying a girl who was returning to Mexico after receiving treatment for a life-threatening illness at a U.S. hospital crashed in Northeast Philadelphia, killing all six people on board, a seventh person who was in a vehicle on the ground and injuring at least 22 others.
  • The crash occurred shortly after 6 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 31, 2025, near the Roosevelt Mall and intersection of Roosevelt Boulevard and Cottman Avenue. Multiple videos obtained by NBC10 show the plane plummeting from the sky, crashing to the ground and a massive explosion shortly after. Multiple homes in the area caught fire.
  • According to the FAA, the plane was a Learjet 55 that left Northeast Philadelphia Airport and was headed for Springfield-Branson National Airport and stopping in Missouri before traveling to its final destination of Tijuana, Mexico.
  • Valentina Guzman Murillo, a girl who was returning to Mexico after receiving treatment for a life-threatening illness at Shriners Children’s Philadelphia, was among the six people on board the flight. The other victims include Murillo’s mother, Lizeth Murillo Ozuna, Captain Alan Alejandro Montoya Perales, co-pilot Josue de Jesus Juarez Juarez, Dr. Raul Meza Arredondo, and paramedic Rodrigo Lopez Padilla.
  • The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is leading the investigation. On Sunday, the NTSB recovered the black box or cockpit voice recorder from the medical jet.
  • A shelter for those impacted by the crash opened at Samuel Fels High School on 5500 Langdon Street in Philadelphia.
  • Of the 22 people who were hurt in the crash, five of them remain in the hospital and three of them are in critical condition, Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker said.

NBC10 obtained the photos of Valentina Guzman Murillo and her mother Lizeth Murillo Ozuna. The mother and daughter -- along with Captain Alan Alejandro Montoya Perales, co-pilot Josue de Jesus Juarez Juarez, Dr. Raul Meza Arredondo and paramedic Rodrigo Lopez Padilla -- were all killed when the medical jet they were on crashed in Northeast Philadelphia on Friday, Jan. 31, 2025.

The flight was headed to Missouri and ultimately bound for Mexico, where all the victims on board the jet were from.

Valentina Guzman Murillo had received treatment for a life-threatening illness at Shriners Children’s Philadelphia and had just been released from the hospital prior to the deadly crash.

A seventh person -- who has not yet been identified -- was killed while in a vehicle on the ground during the crash. At least 22 other people were injured and three of them remain in critical condition, Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker announced on Sunday.

Town hall on plane crash to be held on Wednesday

Officials announced a town hall meeting will be held in Northeast Philadelphia to answer questions from residents impacted by Friday's deadly medical jet crash.

The town hall will take place on Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2025, at 7 p.m. at a location in Northeast Philadelphia that has not yet been decided.

Philly public schools will remain open on Monday

The Philadelphia School District announced there will be no school closures on Monday, Feb. 3, 2025, following Friday's deadly medical jet crash in Northeast Philly.

Officials said no charter schools in the city were impacted by the incident. They also said any delays due to the incident will be excused.

NTSB recovers black box from medical jet that crashed in Philly

National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigators recovered the black box or cockpit voice recorder (CVR) from the Learjet 55 that crashed in Northeast Philadelphia on Friday, Jan. 31, 2025.

The CVR was located at the site of the initial impact -- near Cottman Avenue and Rupert Street -- at a depth of eight feet.

The NTSB also recovered the aircraft's enhanced ground proximity warning system (EGPWS) which could possibly contain flight data.

The CVR and EGPWS will be sent to the NTSB Vehicle Recorders Laboratory in Washington, DC, for an evaluation.

A family member of a woman who was badly injured during the deadly medical jet crash in Northeast Philadelphia spoke with NBC10’s Brian Sheehan. She said her loved one suffered severe burns and is in a medically induced coma. 

As loved ones continue to mourn the seven people who died after a medical jet crashed in Northeast Philadelphia on Friday, the survivors of the crash – including at least 22 people who were injured – are dealing with the aftermath of the tragedy as well.

The injured victims include Shantelle Fletcher’s 33-year-old cousin named Dominque.

“She is in a medically-induced coma,” Fletcher told NBC10 on Sunday. “Seventy percent of her body is burnt. She’s responding well to medication. She has surgery scheduled for today.”

On Friday, Jan. 31, 2025, shortly after 6 p.m., Dominique was in the car with her longtime partner and his son while driving to the Macy’s store at the Roosevelt Mall on Cottman Avenue. Suddenly, a Learjet 55 that had just departed from the Northeast Philadelphia Airport less than three miles away plummeted to the ground, causing a massive explosion and a fireball that engulfed everything in its path.

More roads reopen in the area of Philly plane crash

More roads reopened in Northeast Philadelphia on Sunday, two days after a medical jet plummeted to the ground, killing all six people on board, a seventh person on the ground and injuring 22 others.

Philadelphia police reopened the outer lanes of Roosevelt Boulevard in both directions. Cottman Avenue remains closed. Drivers in the area should expect delays on surrounding roads and use caution when traveling.

SEPTA is currently operating with seven bus detours between Cottman, Bustleton and Tyson avenues due to the crash.

Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker said, in an update Sunday, Feb. 2, 2025, that, at least 22 people on the ground were hurt when a plane crashed in Northeast Philadelphia. Five of them remain hospitalized while three of them are in critical condition, Parker said. The crash killed all six people on board including a girl who was traveling back to her native Mexico after receiving life-saving treatment at a Philadelphia children's hospital.

Officials have identified the crew members as well as the patient and mother who were on the plane the crashed in Northeast Philadelphia on Friday night.

On Saturday, Jet Rescue Air Ambulance identified the crew as Capt. Alan Alejandro Montoya Perales, co-pilot Josue de Jesus Juarez Juarez, Dr. Raul Meza Arredondo, paramedic Rodrigo Lopez Padilla.

Also, the Government of Ensenada identified the patient and her mother who both died in the crash. They were identified as Valentina Guzman Murillo and her mother, Lizeth Murillo Ozuna.

If you’re planning on donating to the victims of the deadly medical jet crash, there are certain red flags to look out for so that the donations go to the right place. NBC10 Responds reporter Tracy Davidson explains.

Resources are available for neighbors and victims of the medical jet that crashed in Northeast Philadelphia on Friday night.

The city's Office of Emergency Management partnered with the American Red Cross as well as the School District of Philadelphia to open a shelter for anyone who was displaced.

Officials are urging anyone who see anything unusual or resembling debris to not touch it but to call 9-1-1 right away to report it.

A medical jet transporting a child who had just completed treatment for a life-threatening condition, her mother and four others crashed into a Philadelphia neighborhood shortly after takeoff Friday evening, killing everyone on board as well as a person inside a vehicle and injuring at least 22 others.

Jet Rescue Air Ambulance, which operated the Learjet 55, initially said in a statement on Friday: “We cannot confirm any survivors.” During a Saturday morning press conference, Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker confirmed that everyone on board -- as well as a person inside a vehicle on the ground -- had died.

In an update on Saturday, Jet Rescue Air Ambulance identified the crew as Capt. Alan Alejandro Montoya Perales, co-pilot Josue de Jesus Juarez Juarez, Dr. Raul Meza Arredondo, paramedic Rodrigo Lopez Padilla.

The Government of Ensenada also identified the patient and her mother who died in the crash as Valentina Guzman Murillo and Lizeth Murillo Ozuna, respectively.

A medical transport jet carrying a child patient, her mother and four others slammed into a Northeast Philadelphia neighborhood on Friday, Jan. 31, 2025, killing everyone on board as well as a person in a vehicle on the ground and injuring at least 22 others.

The plane crashed 30 seconds after takeoff from Northeast Philadelphia airport, which primarily serves business jets and charter flights. 

The plane was headed to Springfield-Branson National Airport in Springfield, Missouri. From there it would have traveled to Tijuana, Mexico, for its final destination. 

Shai Gold, a spokesperson for Jet Rescue Air Ambulance – the plane’s operator – told NBC10 the six people on board included a girl, her mother, a pilot, copilot, doctor and paramedic.

‘Everything just shook': Witness describes moments plane crashed in Northeast Philly

Witness describes what they saw right when a small plane crashed in Northeast Philadelphia Friday evening. 

One man spoke with NBC10's Aaron Baskerville about when the plane crashed on Friday and the moments after when he said he saw a person on fire.

He was inside the Bath and Body Works store inside the Roosevelt Mall when he said the building shook.

"Out of nowhere, everything just shook. I thought the buildings fell or something," he said.

He explained that he walked outside he saw what looked like a "huge explosion."
