South Jersey Officer Who Struck, Killed Pedestrian Won't Face Charges

A police officer who struck and killed a pedestrian while responding to a call won't face criminal charges.

Ocean County prosecutor Joseph Coronato said Thursday that there are no grounds to charge Lacey officer Andrew Slota with any criminal or motor vehicle charges.

Coronato said an investigation found Slota was driving at a high speed while responding to a report of a disturbance at a nuclear generating plant in July when an intoxicated Neil Van De Putte crossed in front of him.

Officials said Slota was driving through a green light without the police car's lights and sirens on while Van De Putte was crossing against a red light.

Van De Putte was pronounced dead at the scene a short time after the accident.
